By Gabrielle Corse, BLANKSPACES Community Experience Manager

BLANKSPACES Pasadena member, Dena Oberst is quite an inspiring woman. She has created her own success by working hard, staying organized, and being an all-around good person. Dena has worked in the sales and use tax industry for over 25 years. She was a consultant and manager at Arthur Anderson, and subsequently developed the sales tax compliance and automation practices for several major accounting firms. Dena has represented hundreds of clients ranging from the Fortune 500 to middle-market and start-ups. A year ago she decided to break away from the corporate model and founded her own consulting firm, Gable Tax Group, specializing in sales and use tax compliance, consulting, and automation services.

Many of Dena’s clients say that she is not a “typical” tax accountant. By taking note of key details like birthdays, and forming trusting relationships, Dena is able to maintain business and gain new clients through referrals. When asked about her passion, Dena told us that she simply enjoys making her clients’ lives better. If she wasn’t running her own sales tax accounting firm, Dena says she would like to mentor young professional women.

When Dena isn’t working, you can find her golfing, salsa dancing, and reading business books. She is in the early stages of writing her own book as well. Dena also volunteers with Stand Up For a Cure and is an active board member of Pacific Clinics.

Dena is looking forward the second year of her new business.
Her advice to new entrepreneurs is to “surround yourself with a community of other business owners” and not to go at it alone.
